BMW ISTA+ (Rheingold) Installation and Setup Hints - Part 1
BMW ISTA-D (Rheingold) and Ediabas for BMW - Configuration Tips for Windows 7
- for using the K+DCAN - USB - OBD cable.
PART 1: Resolving Communication Issues
Many people have problems setting up the BMW software to talk with their car over the USB-OBD cable, because it's difficult to find detailed documentation all in one place. The information in this article is compiled from many sources (links will be provided).
If your software is not communicating with and identifying your car, try these steps:
0. On your K+DCAN usb cable, put the switch to the LEFT position (for the K-bus on E-series cars).
1. Run ISTA, and go into settings (top button that looks like a wrench).
I hope you got something helpful out of my first article on BMW GENIUS!
If you have any issues, let me know in the comments and I'll try to help.

If your software is not communicating with and identifying your car, try these steps:
0. On your K+DCAN usb cable, put the switch to the LEFT position (for the K-bus on E-series cars).
1. Run ISTA, and go into settings (top button that looks like a wrench).
Click the rightmost tab, VCI Config.
Interface Type should be the first choice, "ediabas.ini". Hit ok and exit ISTA.
2. Find EDIABAS.INI (probably in C:\EDIABAS\BIN )
Edit EDIABAS.INI with Notepad, e.g.
"Interface" should be set to "STD:OBD"
3. In Windows Device Manager, look for "Ports" (COM+LPT). My list did not have "Ports" until I plugged in the k+dcan usb cable. When I plugged it in, "Ports" appeared with one device under it: USB Serial Port on COM4. I believe Windows 7 latest update has the driver ready to be loaded when "plug and play" detects the chip in the cable. (Of interest: https://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/VCP.htm)

3a. Make a note of the COM port number for later.
3b. Right-click on the serial port and get the Properties. Set the baud rate to 9600.
3c. Go into Advanced, and set the Latency Timer to 1 msec.
3d. Type your COM port number into the OBD.INI file (in C:\EDIABAS\BIN ) in the appropriate place.
4. Oh, I almost forgot... Make sure your environment variables "ediabas_config_dir" and "Path" have the correct path to EDIABAS\BIN. Yours is most likely "C:\EDIABAS\BIN". See the image, my installation is on my external E: drive.
5. Save, and reboot your computer.
6. Plug into your cable (USB to OBD), and fire up ISTA-D. ENJOY!
